Toshinari Tamura, Ph.D., Joins Board of Directors of FibroGen, Inc.

South San Francisco, Calif. - August 29, 2008 - FibroGen, Inc. today announced that Toshinari Tamura, Ph.D., recently retired Representative Director, Executive Vice President and Chief Science Officer of Astellas Pharma, Inc., has joined FibroGen's Board of Directors.

Dr. Tamura has been involved with FibroGen and the company's development of Hypoxia Inducible Factor Prolyl Hydroxylase Inhibitors (HIF-PHIs) for the treatment of anemia since 2004, when Yamanouchi Pharmaceutical Co., Ltd., the pharmaceutical company that merged with Fujisawa to form Astellas Pharma, Inc., first licensed the rights to the HIF-PHI anemia program in Japan. In 2006, Astellas and FibroGen broadened the anemia partnership to include greater Europe.

Dr. Tamura joined Yamanouchi Pharmaceutical Co., Ltd., in 1972 after having received a Ph.D. degree from the University of Tokyo, Graduate School of Pharmaceutical Sciences. Dr. Tamura rose through the organization to become Executive Corporate Officer and Representative Director of Yamanouchi in 2004 and in 2005 was named Executive Vice President of Astellas Pharma, Inc.. Dr. Tamura was on the Board of Directors of Astellas until June of 2008.
