Cancer
FibroGen is working on the discovery and development of small molecules that inhibit TGF-beta for the potential treatment of cancer. TGF-beta is an important regulator of cell growth and is found is abnormally high levels in certain cancers. At a certain stage of malignancy, cells lose their ability to be growth-inhibited by TGF-beta and produce increased amounts of TGF-beta. TGF-beta stimulates angiogenesis (supplying the tumor with new blood vessels), suppresses the immune system (helping the tumor escape immune defenses), and causes tumor cells to become invasive and metastatic.
