FibroGen Appoints Claire J. Lockey, Vice President, Regulatory Affairs

South San Francisco, Calif. - August 11, 2003 - FibroGen, Inc., today announced that Claire J. Lockey has been appointed Vice President of Regulatory Affairs. Ms. Lockey brings to FibroGen a successful track record in obtaining approval from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for numerous products including drugs, biologics, and medical devices.

Ms. Lockey will be responsible for meeting regulatory requirements at each step of product development and for developing and applying strategies that lead to rapid and successful approval of FibroGen's product candidates. Her immediate focus will be on FibroGen's recombinant gelatin stabilizer and on the Company's most advanced clinical candidates, including a small molecule erythropoietic agent for the treatment of anemia, a human monoclonal antibody that inhibits the activity of connective tissue growth factor (CTGF) for the treatment of fibrotic diseases, a small molecule for preconditioning the kidneys against ischemic injury, and injectable synthetic collagen for wrinkle correction.

"With the recent and successful completion of our recombinant gelatin safety trial and planned submission of Investigational New Drug applications to the FDA, I look forward to Claire's contributions in helping us navigate the regulatory process," said Thomas B. Neff, Chief Executive Officer. "Her regulatory expertise is expected to be a valuable asset in helping FibroGen to minimize the time and costs associated with successful product development."

Ms. Lockey has over thirty years of experience in the pharmaceutical industry with twenty years devoted to regulatory affairs and new drug and biologic development. She joins FibroGen from Titan Pharmaceuticals where she was also Vice President of Regulatory Affairs. Prior to Titan, Ms. Lockey held similar executive-level positions at other biopharmaceutical companies including Layton Bioscience, Connetics, Gore Hybrid Technologies and a ten-year consulting position at Synergia, an organization focused on regulatory and clinical development of new health care products. Ms. Lockey earned her B.A. in Biology at Boston University, MA.
