FibroGen Appoints David Y. Liu, Ph.D., Vice President, Research

South San Francisco, Calif. - January 22, 2003 - FibroGen, Inc., a privately held biotechnology company, today announced the appointment of David Y. Liu, Ph.D., Vice President, Research. Dr. Liu will focus on the rapid advancement of FibroGen's small molecule and therapeutic antibody programs towards the development stage. FibroGen's therapeutics business is centered on the discovery and development of novel drugs that target Connective Tissue Growth Factor (CTGF) and various prolyl hydroxylase enzymes for the treatment of diseases and medical conditions associated with fibrosis (excessive scarring) and ischemia (reduced blood flow to an organ or tissue), respectively.

Dr. Liu joins FibroGen from Scios, Inc., where he was the Director of Inflammation Research and project leader for Scios' first two kinase inhibitor programs. Under his direction, new chemical entities with novel mechanisms of action were discovered and are progressing through preclinical and clinical development. Prior to his tenure at Scios, Dr. Liu held scientist positions at COR Therapeutics and Cetus Corporation, leading projects to investigate inflammation and leukocyte adhesion inhibitors.

"Dr. Liu brings to FibroGen a successful track record in drug discovery and development, and we expect him to play a key role in fostering the continued growth of our therapeutics business," said Thomas B. Neff, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer. "Our prolyl hydroxylase and CTGF programs have already yielded two lead drug candidates in preclinical development. Dr. Liu's contributions are expected to help us to fully develop the wide potential of these therapeutic platforms."

Dr. Liu also held a research position as an associate immunologist in the Department of Rheumatology at the Brigham and Women's Hospital, Boston, MA, and was an instructor and assistant professor of Medicine at the Harvard Medical School. He is an author of over fifty-two original research reports and reviews and a named inventor on thirteen patents or patent applications, as well as an editor of Adhesion: Its Role in Inflammatory Disease (1992). Dr. Liu earned a Ph.D. in Microbiology and Immunology from Michigan State University and a B.S. in Chemistry from the University of Chicago.
